Man Utd prepared to take massive hit over Dean Henderson transfer

Manchester United are planning to offload backup goalkeeper Dean Henderson this summer and are prepared to continue paying a portion of his salary, according to reports.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper has been on the periphery at Old Trafford ever since returning to the club in 2020 following a two-year loan spell at Sheffield United.

According to The Sun, United have decided to shake up their goalkeeping options at the end of the season and, to assist Henderson’s departure, will subsidise a chunk of the Englishman’s £120,000-a-week wages.

The report goes on to say that the club could pay as much as half of his salary at a new club as they look to sign a new No.2 and No.3 in the summer.

Leaving United won’t be easy for Henderson who has been at the club since he joined the academy aged just 14.

Following a number of short-term spells in the lower leagues with the likes of Shrewsbury Town and Stockport County, he was signed by Chris Wilder on loan at Sheffield United in 2018 and became a mainstay at Bramall Lane as the team won promotion to the Premier League.

After a successful season playing in the top flight with the Blades, Henderson was recalled by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer of 2020 with a view to challenging David De Gea for the No.1 spot at United.

However, Henderson was unable to usurp De Gea and has received little playing time at Old Trafford, making just three appearances for the Red Devils’ first-team this season.

In January, the goalkeeper asked for a loan move away from the club but was refused permission by interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

It is said long-time admirers Fulham and Newcastle could be interested in a move for Henderson when the transfer window opens in June.
