Man Utd now getting 'encouragement' over deal for £42m star at Old Trafford

Manchester United are getting “encouragement” in their pursuit of PSV star Cody Gakpo, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Erik ten Hag is desperate to sign attacking reinforcements before the window closes, with the flying winger on the Dutchman’s radar.

Earlier this month, Sky Sports claimed that the Red Devils were ‘preparing a move’ for the £35m-rated star, who shares the same agency as Ten Hag.

United got their first victory of the season against Liverpool on Monday, with wide men Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford both impressing, but they still need to bolster their forward options.

PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy was recently quizzed about Gakpo’s future and admitted that he’s relaxed despite the intense interest.

“I think I am very relaxed about the situation,” he said. “There have been rumours about him since the beginning of the season almost eight weeks ago and we have not seen Cody changing his behaviour up to now.”

But PSV expert Rik Elfrink has claimed that United have agreed personal terms with Gakpo, although the Eredivisie giants are holding out for £42m.

Sheth reckons that United wouldn’t be doing this much work if they weren’t getting “encouragement” that a deal could happen.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “PSV qualifying for the Champions League or not, will that have an impact whether Gakpo stays? You’ll have to ask the player, but the information we are getting is that Manchester United would not be pushing for a signing like this if they weren’t getting encouragement from somewhere, be it the club or the players camp, that Gakpo wants to come to Manchester United.”
