Man Utd made late ‘check call’ to Brighton over Bissouma before Spurs sealed transfer

Man Utd made a late enquiry to fellow Premier League side Brighton over Yves Bissouma before his transfer to Tottenham, according to reports.

Spurs confirmed the arrival of Bissouma yesterday with the north London club paying a £25m fee, which could rise due to add-ons inserted in the transfer.

Bissouma has spent the last four years in England with Premier League side Brighton after joining from French side Lille in 2018.

And The Athletic has revealed that there was some interest from Man Utd in Bissouma before Tottenham sealed a deal for the Malian on Friday.

Man Utd have made Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong their top midfield target this summer but they are struggling to agree a fee with the Catalan giants.

The Athletic added: ‘United this week made a check call to Brighton on Yves Bissouma before his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur emerged. But Bissouma was not regarded as a serious candidate to pursue at this stage. De Jong is the box-to-box midfielder Ten Hag wants.’

On signing for Tottenham, Bissouma described his excitement at playing in the Champions League next season.

“When I was young, football was my life. I wanted to play football every day, every moment. If I don’t play football I am not happy,” Bissouma told Spurs TV.

“Now to be a football professional, to be at Spurs, a big club, when I remember 11 or 12 years ago, it gives me some sensations. My mum and dad are here as well and they help me a lot.

“To be here in London, with Spurs, and the Champions League music, imagine? The emotion is too much. I just say thank you to God.
