Paul Merson believes new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has already missed out on the "signing of the summer".

The Dutchman has started work to overturn United's fortunes on the pitch following a disappointing campaign last season and is expected to overhaul the playing squad at Old Trafford.

Midfield is known to be a priority area for improvement, but Merson thinks United should have gone all out to sign Yves Bissouma ahead of Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

It comes as the Red Devils have stepped up their pursuit of Christian Eriksen as details of their contract offer have come to light. And Erik ten Hag is expected to ignore transfer advice given to him by a former Red Devils player to sign the "next Ruud van Nistelrooy" and pursue his own targets.
