Man Utd have £172k-a-week star 'on list' as Ronaldo replacement at Old Trafford

Manchester United have Barcelona forward Memphis Depay on their shortlist, according to Fabrizio Romano.

However, the transfer expert says no negotiations are going on right now while a move could also depend on the future of Cristiano Ronaldo, who wants to leave the club.

Last month, the Manchester Evening News reported that United were considering a move for Depay.

Barcelona are thought to be open to letting the 28-year-old go as they look to trim their wage bill amid the club’s financial problems.

If Depay moves to Old Trafford before the transfer window closes tonight, it would, of course, be his second spell there.

The Dutchman joined United from PSV Eindhoven back in 2015, but he endured a difficult time in England before eventually signing for Lyon and then Barcelona. In 53 appearances, he scored just seven times for the Red Devils.

Romano has told GIVEMESPORT that Depay is on United’s list but nothing is close at the moment.

Speaking to GMS, the Italian journalist said: “The real problem is that, as of now, there are no negotiations between Depay and Man United.

“He knows he’s on the list. He’s one of the names, but now they don’t have any other priorities. They signed Antony. Let’s see what happens with Cristiano, but nothing is imminent.”

Depay’s £172,000-a-week Barcelona contract expires next year, but there was a lot of talk last month about it being terminated now.

It is unclear whether both parties are still open to that, but if they are, United or another club could be about to get a real bargain.
