Man United two transfers away from unleashing proven Mikel Arteta trick after £170m overhaul

All of the current top clubs in Europe have the luxury of players capable of playing in more than one position.

European champions Real Madrid use Eduardo Camavinga as a left-back and central midfielder. Manchester City use Julian Alvarez in a range of positions and Liverpool have used Cody Gakpo in every possible attacking role.

Manchester United, minus Marcus Rashford's occasional trial at centre-forward and Diogo Dalot's ability to play both left-back and right-back, do not have the same luxury.

Over the years, United have struggled with injuries to key players of Erik ten Hag that have ultimately impacted their performance on the pitch. Injuries to Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia have often left the Reds without a full squad of senior players.

The 2024/25 season is approaching and United are back in pre-season. Ahead of a tour to the USA, United are making moves in the transfer window and this week alone, have progressed well in their attempt to add reinforcements to their defence.

Personal terms have been agreed with Matthijs de Ligt and a bid valued between €60m and €70m (£50.6m-£59.1m) for Lille star Leny Yoro has been accepted, MEN Sport understands. The club haven't had the same success in their pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite though, with Everton rejecting the latest bid of £50m.

Bayern Munich want £42m for De Ligt while Everton value Branthwaite between £70m-£80m. Add those to the Yoro fee and United could be paying over £170m to land three centre-backs.
