Dan Ashworth's 'role' in Steve McClaren Man United exit revealed after coaching shake-up

Steve McClaren's departure from Manchester United was reportedly influenced by a change in his role following the restructuring of Erik ten Hag's coaching setup.

McClaren has now been appointed as Jamaica's new manager, marking his return to international football since his dismissal by England in 2007. Previously part of Ten Hag's coaching staff at United since his appointment in summer 2022, his role had been altered for the upcoming Premier League season.

Instead of joining Ten Hag and the majority of United's squad for their pre-season tour of the USA, McClaren remained in Manchester, working with players returning from Euro 2024 and the Copa America. Following discussions with Jamaica, the 63-year-old chose to embrace a new challenge.

The Athletic reports that Dan Ashworth, who joined from Newcastle earlier this month after lengthy negotiations, facilitated a smooth exit for McClaren. The former Middlesbrough, Twente and Wolfsburg manager, who also served as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Old Trafford between 1999 and 2001, expressed his excitement about his new role.

"I am extremely proud and excited to take up the position of Head Coach for the Jamaica Men's National Team. I had no hesitation in accepting a position that is ideally suited to me at this stage of my career," said McClaren in a statement. "Before my second stint at Manchester United, I served as a Technical Advisor on FIFA's Global Eco Analysis project.
