Man United 'reignite' Frenkie de Jong transfer interest amid Erik ten Hag pressure

Manchester United are reportedly still keen on signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong despite missing out on him during Erik ten Hag's first summer transfer window at the club.

When Ten Hag initially arrived at Old Trafford, there was an acceptance that the Reds needed to improve their midfield. For the vast majority of that window, United were embroiled in an on-again-off-again transfer saga with the Catalan club for De Jong.

Eventually, Barca decided they wanted to keep the Dutchman in their ranks and United were left scrambling for a central midfielder. In the ensuing chaos, United ended up paying over the odds for Casemiro and while he impressed in his first season, the Brazilian has struggled since.

Despite signing Manuel Ugarte in the summer, it appears United will want to add another central midfielder at the end of the season. Current starter Christian Eriksen looks likely to be leaving at the end of the season and De Jong would fit the bill as a natural replacement.

According to SPORT, Ten Hag believes De Jong would add the much needed creativity that United are crying out for in the centre of the park. De Jong's current deal in Catalonia is set to expire in 2026.

United's manager is currently under increasing pressure to turn the club around having got off to their worst ever start to a Premier League season. Ineos are believed to have discussed Ten Hag's future at a 'routine' meeting during the October international break but since then, they have remained quiet on the Dutchman's future.
