Man United owners the Glazers told £650m investment plan 'doesn't have legs'

Barry Hearn has advised the Glazer family against making a big-money investment in The Hundred.

Manchester United's majority owners are understood to be part of a plan that would see shares of The Hundred product sold off for around £650million. This sum represents the total value of the 49% stakes believed to be available in each of the eight teams competing.

It's been reported the Glazers are contemplating a stake in the London Spirit, who are based at Lord's. However, Matchroom Sport chief Hearn himself would steer clear of such a deal.

"I don't think The Hundred's got a great future," Hearn told The Mirror ahead of the 2024 Mosconi Cup, which starts in Florida on Saturday. "I think it look's a bit too samey for me."

The Hundred was first launched in the summer of 2021 when there was a global appetite for new sport following the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite an initially positive response, however, it seems fans have returned to more traditional formats in recent years.

Sportcal reported a significant dip in viewership for The Hundred, with men’s matches on Sky seeing a 28% drop last season and women’s games down by 41% on the same channel. Some critics argue the market is overloaded with limited-overs formats, complicating the task of keeping pace with each cricket variation.
