Man United have one player who is ‘entitled’ to have quiet game, says Roy Keane

Roy Keane has come out in support of Bruno Fernandes following his underwhelming display against Liverpool.

Manchester United's start to the new season has been less than ideal, with two defeats in their first three Premier League games. A 3-0 loss at the hands of arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday was especially bitter, and Keane wasted little time hitting out at his former side.

On the latest Stick to Football podcast episode, the ex-Red Devils captain, 53, scrutinised the team's lack of tactical clarity and accused key players of not showing up. However, he stopped short of criticising Fernandes, despite the fact the 29-year-old barely made a mark on proceedings.

"Bruno never turned up - [but] Bruno's entitled to have a quiet game," Keane told his colleagues. Earlier, Jamie Carragher had pointed out United's carelessness with possession, which contributed to a distinct lack of solidity in central areas.

Keane countered by arguing that providing stability is the defenders' responsibility, and when midfielders slip up, it's up to those behind them to extinguish any threats. "When you make mistakes you hope your defenders cover you, or your goalkeeper," he said.

"United are not really a settled team because there are still players coming to the club, and that's not an excuse, [but] when you're not at it you make mistakes."

Gary Neville then asked his former team-mate if United needed to change their playing style or simply get better at it, though Keane suggested a balanced approach. "A little bit of both," he replied.
