Man United have green light to unleash Europa League final wildcard - and Ruben Amorim will love it
"I knew something good was going to come," beamed Mason Mount on the Old Trafford pitch after his starring role in the latest memorable European night at the famous old ground.
It may have been the Europa League rather than the Champions League, but this was the most sizeable match of Mount's Manchester United career.
His double off the bench against Athletic Bilbao secured a spot in the final and made it three goals in two games for Mount, who had managed just one in United colours prior to this week.
Since arriving in 2023 from Chelsea for £55million he's had rotten luck with injuries, shown by a paltry tally of 10 league starts for the Reds.
But Thursday night showed just what the England international can offer. He is tailormade for one of the two number 10 roles in this United side and has the backing of his manager.
Ruben Amorim declared his love for Mount earlier this term and his delight for the 26-year-old in midweek was genuine.
"Not just me, if you look at the bench, that is the best feeling as a coach,' Amorim said of the joy at seeing the midfielder find the net. "When you look at the other guys on the bench, they are so happy for Mason Mount because everybody in that dressing room sees Mason doing everything he can to be available."
Mount spent time in Portugal last summer at his own expense to build fitness and ensure he was ready for the new campaign, while he has remained upbeat despite his fitness struggles and is a popular figure in the dressing room.
He's played a part in each of United's last 10 games, albeit only starting once, while he hasn't completed 90 minutes since November 2023.
