Man United handed transfer priority, Ayden Heaven verdict and Ruben Amorim reality
Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has offered a strongly worded view on his former club as their struggles under Ruben Amorim continue.
The Reds currently sit 13th in the Premier League table after 31 matches and are on course for their lowest finish in the top flight for more than three decades. United never recovered from a shaky start under Erik ten Hag and have shown little improvement since the former Ajax boss was sacked and replaced by ex-Sporting Lisbon head coach Amorim.
United's disappointing campaign can be somewhat rescued by winning the Europa League - a victory which will guarantee an unlikely place in next season's Champions League.
And Stam, who made 127 appearances for the Reds has offered his take on United's season in an exclusive interview with The Manchester Evening News. The Dutchman was first asked about Amorim and how he views United as a whole in 2024/25.
"When Ten Hag was sacked and Amorim came in, everything changed again," he said via FreeBets. "Amorim introduced a completely new system—switching from a 4-3-3 to a 5-2-3. When you have a squad built for one system and then switch to another, it’s natural that players will struggle to adapt.
"Players bought to fit a 4-3-3 suddenly had to adjust to a completely different setup. That transition is tough, and it showed in the inconsistency of their performances. Amorim has also been experimenting with different players in various positions, which hasn’t helped with building consistency.
"The season has been far from spectacular, and their current position—13th place—isn’t good enough. Hopefully, Amorim will have the chance to bring in players that fit his system over the summer so he can build a team that can produce the performances he wants.
