Man United handed new referee verdict after Morgan Rogers handball and Kobbie Mainoo decision

Manchester United should not have been awarded a penalty for a handball from Morgan Rogers during their 0-0 draw at Aston Villa, according to former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher.

United felt they should have been given a spot-kick in the 22nd minute at Villa Park after Harry Maguire's downward header struck the arm of Rogers. However, referee Rob Jones waived away on-pitch appeals. The decision was checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming that the "ball was played from close proximity".

Now, Gallagher, who was an official in the top-flight for 15 years, told Sky Sports: "It did (strike his arm) I wonder about this one, do you really want to see a penalty ever given for that? The answer quite clearly is no.

"I'd also say, 'is he in the penalty area?' I didn’t think he was. It got checked, he's got his back to the ball, ball is headed against him, play on."

Another contentious decision from the match was when Kobbie Mainoo was booked for a challenge on Youri Tielemans during the first half. There were calls from some Villa fans asking for Mainoo to be sent off, but Jones gave him a yellow card and VAR didn't decide to intervene.

"It's a yellow card, he goes in, it's one of them, he's overran the ball, they're in a hurry to get it back, he stretches, it's low and catches him," Gallagher said on Mainoo's tackle. "Yellow card."
