Man United confirm key midfield figure Christian Eriksen out for three months

Manchester United have confirmed that star midfielder Christian Eriksen has been ruled out for at least three months after sustaining an ankle injury against Reading last weekend.

Lanky forward Andy Carroll put in a reckless challenge against the Denmark international during the FA Cup fourth tie at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Despite winning the game 3-1 and setting up fifth round clash against West Ham United, the Red Devils will lose the 30-year-old during a busy period as they are still competing in four competitions.

"Eriksen is expected to be out of action for an extended period because of an ankle injury sustained in our Emirates FA Cup victory over Reading on Saturday," the club said in a statement release.

"While investigations are continuing, initial assessments indicate that Eriksen is likely to be out until late April or early May.

"The 30-year-old's absence will be a big disappointment to manager Erik ten Hag and fans, given the consistency of his performances throughout the season so far, making 31 appearances since arriving at Old Trafford."

It seems highly unlikely for United to use the January transfer window deadline day as the perfect opportunity to bring in reinforcements.

Man United are back in action on Wednesday (22:00) in the League Cup semi-final second-leg against Nottingham Forest and then again on Saturday (17:00), welcoming Crystal Palace to Old Trafford.
