Man seriously injured in Stockport crash which saw air ambulance land before fire breaks out in building

A man has been seriously injured after a crash in Stockport town centre. It happened on Great Underbank, where it turns into Chestergate, at around 10am this morning (Friday).

Emergency services raced to the scene near the Stockport Air Raid Shelters. The air ambulance was seen landing nearby. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed a man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A police cordon remained in place until just after 3:30pm. No further details have yet been released. There are as yet unconfirmed reports of an elderly man being struck by a car.

A Volkswagen car was seen being loaded onto a low-loading recovery truck inside the cordon shortly before it was lifted. An unrelated fire also broke out close by around an hour after the collision.

It took hold in a building also on Chestergate, believed to be inside the cordon near the Primark store. Three fire engines attended and spent an hour and a half tackling the blaze.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 11am this morning (Friday 31 May) three fire engines from Offerton, Marple and Cheadle fire stations were called to reports of a fire involving the roof of a commercial building on Chestergate, Stockport.”

“Crews arrived quickly and used one hose reel to extinguish the flames, before clearing smoke from the premises and making the area safe. Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour and a half.”
