Man killed in tragic motorbike crash

A man aged in his 70s has died in a motorbike collision, police have said. Emergency services were called to Haigh Road in Aspull, near Wigan, at 9.30pm on Wednesday.

Greater Manchester Police said the force received reports of a collision involving a motorbike and a pedestrian. GMP confirmed today - Friday - the pensioner was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been named.

The force said the motorcyclist remained at the scene 'to assist officers with their enquiries'. There are no reports of any other injuries. Police have now issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

In a statement, GMP said on Friday: "At around 9.30pm on Wednesday, emergency services were called to a report of a collision involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian on Haigh Road, Aspull.

"Sadly, the pedestrian, a man in his 70s, died at the scene. The motorcyclist stayed at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries."

Constable Lee Gandy, of GMPs Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "A man has tragically lost his life in this incident and our thoughts are very much with his family at this difficult time.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this collision, or anyone who has dash cam or CCTV footage to please get in touch with police on 0161 856 6741 quoting log number 3343 of the 18th May 2022”.

No further information has been revealed.
