Man 'glassed' and woman attacked as tram violence spills onto Metrolink platform

A man was 'glassed' and a woman attacked as violence on board a Metrolink tram spilled out onto a platform at a busy Manchester interchange.

Police have issued a public appeal for information over what they described as a 'serious assault'. Emergency services were called to Cornbrook Metrolink interchange at around 10.20pm on Saturday night.

An altercation involving two men and a man and a woman is understood to have broken out on board a tram heading into Manchester city centre.

The man was subsequently struck with a glass, Greater Manchester Police confirmed, and the woman received a blow to the face. Her injuries are described as minor, but there's been no update as to the man's injuries or condition.

GMP confirmed the violence spilled out onto platform at Cornbrook. Both men then left the scene. There have been no reported arrests and inquiries are ongoing.

The stop on Cornbrook Road - between Old Trafford and Castlefield - was reportedly cordoned off last night as investigations got underway. There have been no further reports of any other injuries.

Latest figures - revealed by the Manchester Evening News - show falling levels of anti-social behaviour on the Metrolink tram network.

The rate of anti-social behaviour on trams has fallen from 95 incidents per million passenger journeys to 72. Assaults connected to the tram network, however, have risen by 17 per cent.

A recruitment drive has led to more TravelSafe officers on the network catching trouble-makers and Greater Manchester Police has launched a specific operation to target issues.
