Man fighting for life following reported stabbing after intruders storm house

A man is fighting for his life in hospital following a reported stabbing in Withington. Intruders stormed the house on Heysham Avenue on Sunday afternoon (May 21) in what is thought to have been a 'targeted attack'.

Police and paramedics raced to the scene where one man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. He remains in a critical condition following the incident.

A cordon was erected on Halebank Avenue and Heysham Avenue with a number of police vehicles at the scene, along with crime scene investigators and detectives. An air ambulance also reportedly landed nearby.

Greater Manchester Police have said there will be an increased number of patrols in the area following the assault but that they believe the attack was targeted at this time.

Those living nearby spoke to the Manchester Evening News of their horror upon seeing police swarming the quiet street on Sunday, with one mum saying: "It is very concerning and worrying to see."

"I saw young lads running down the road and when I came out, everyone was in the street. They were saying that somebody had been stabbed," she added.

There were unconfirmed reports from witnesses that the victim had been stabbed in the neck and chest in the attack. Police said they initially received reports of a male who had been assaulted by intruders.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At approximately 4:40pm today, Sunday 21 May 2023, officers received reports relating to a male who had been assaulted by intruders at an address on Heysham Avenue.

"Emergency services transported the man to hospital with serious injuries where he is in critical condition.
