Man dies during solo Atlantic rowing trip

A man undertaking a solo charity rowing challenge across the Atlantic Ocean has sadly lost his life. Word of Michael Holt's death was announced on his Facebook page.

Michael, originally from Porthmadog but later moved to Heswall on The Wirral, launched his solo rowing trip from Gran Canaria to Barbados in January, aiming to raise funds for two charities, Wales Online reports.

The UK government, via the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, is lending a hand to Mr Holt's family after his tragic death near Cape Verde.

Following worries about Mr Holt, who was in his 50s, a fishing boat was dispatched to find him. Heartbreakingly, they discovered his body on the boat, and the devastating news was passed onto his family.

A government spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Cape Verde and are in contact with the local authorities."
