Man City transfer window verdict as Pep Guardiola prioritises keeping squad tight

Manchester City have had a quiet transfer window with just two new additions made to Pep Guardiola's squad.

Savinho's arrival from Troyes and Ilkay Gundogan's return after a season at Barcelona are the only new players to arrive at the Etihad Stadium. City's lack of activity doesn't appear to have impacted them on the pitch however.

Guardiola's team have looked impressive in the early stages of their bid for an unprecedented fifth straight Premier League title. City have earned comfortable wins over Chelsea and Ipswich Town and face West Ham next on Saturday.

The main thing is that City aren't weaker at the end of the window than they were at the start, even with Julian Alvarez's exit. He earned City good money, and Ilkay Gundogan's opportunistic arrival covers that number ten position.

Savinho already looks to have been snapped up for great value (don't tell the CFG critics), so while the forward line looks a bit different, there is plenty of versatility and options in attack.I'd have liked to see some cover for Rodri.

Pep Guardiola will point to Mateo Kovacic's impressive start to the season and Gundogan's return as experienced options to marshall defensive midfield, while Rico Lewis, John Stones, Manu Akanji and even Bernardo Silva or Nico O'Reilly can help in that area. There is nobody on the market good enough to replace Rodri, so the next best thing is probably developing a system where two or three players cover that position instead.
