Man City told they have developed a new attribute in their attacking armoury

Manchester City have been told that the link-up between Phil Foden and Erling Haaland is new for their attack.

The Blues were at their best once again on Saturday as they trounced Southampton 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium. Joao Cancelo and Foden got the scoring underway for Pep Guardiola's team in the first half.

Riyad Mahrez and Haaland rounded off the match in the second 45 as the Saints struggled to handle City's attacking prowess. Analysing the match on BBC's Match of the Day, Arsenal and Crystal Palace legend Ian Wright explained how the Blues' in-form duo have improved their team.

When asked if Haaland's play creates space for other players, Wright replied: "It does. We’ve seen, Phil Foden especially with five goals in three games now, it’s threatening that back all the time and threatening the space and you can see [Southampton] are worried about where [Haaland] is going to go."

"I think [Joe] Aribo has got to be in that kind of position [marking Riyad Mahrez on the right wing] because the [Southampton] left-back [Romain Perraud] has got to make sure he is worrying about Haaland as well," the ex-striker added. "Aribo doesn’t come across and you can see the amount of space once [Haaland] makes the moves, look at the space Foden and Mahrez has got in there.

"Everybody has got so much space because they [Southampton] are so worried. Look at this one [for Haaland’s effort that struck the post].

"Normally [Man City] have got that false nine and they are looking to play inside the pitch but Phil Foden, he has not even seen Haaland, he’s not looked, he just knows I’m going to put it in there [behind Southampton’s defence]. Now you can see the defenders running back to their own
