Pep Guardiola told Man City defence not good enough after Liverpool FC defeat

Former Arsenal striker and football pundit Ian Wright has told Pep Guardiola that Manchester City's defence isn't good enough for his team to play so offensively against elite opposition.

City tasted defeat for the first time this season as they lost 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, leaving them four points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal. An afternoon when City's attack - although still creating a few chances - didn't really click, Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the match when he pounced on a Joao Cancelo mistake.

City had numbers committed forward as they had a free-kick in a promising position, so when Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson caught Kevin de Bruyne's delivery he looked up and saw Salah in a potential one-on-one situation with Cancelo.

The keeper launched the ball upfield and Cancelo tried to nip in to take the ball, but the defender mistimed his intervention and Salah was allowed to race through on goal and score. It was the kind of quick attack on the transition that City have been particularly vulnerable against in the past, but over the last couple of years Guardiola has found ways to cope with the threat.

That wasn't the only time Liverpool sliced through the Blues with a quick transition - earlier in the second half Salah left Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias in his wake as he raced in behind the defence, only for Ederson to pull off a crucial save.

Wright, speaking on the Two Robbies podcast, questioned whether City have the defensive personnel to cope with teams that can do to them what Liverpool did.
