Man City told Pep Guardiola succession plan and why it trumps Manchester United

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has tipped Vincent Kompany to follow Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

The two worked alongside each other during Kompany’s latter years as a player, winning two Premier League titles before the Belgian called retired in 2020. A promising start to management saw him win promotion to the top flight with Burnley at the first time of asking.

While winning the Championship itself is no mean feat, the style Kompany introduced was perhaps more eye-catching. The 37-year-old evolved Burnley into one focused on possession and an attacking style of play.

But the Clarets have won just one of their opening eight games this term yet it has not stopped calls for Kompany to succeed Guardiola at the Etihad. And speaking to the Footballer’s Football podcast, Antonio backed the City legend to return to the Blues as manager.

“Honestly, I believe that he (Kompany) will be the next Man City manager,” he said. “That’s what I think anyway. If Pep ever steps down and he keeps doing well at Burnley, I feel like that is the next step.

“The difference between David Moyes at Man United and Vincent Kompany at Man City is he has a good stead himself there. So when he is going in, he should be able to speak to them and go ‘I’m not Pep, I’m coming in and want to bring a new philosophy. I want to bring in my own philosophy right now, Pep’s philosophy is still instilled in the club, so for me to change it there are going to be some difficult times.’
