Man City told how they need to change from last season to get the best out of Erling Haaland

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has explained how Manchester City can play to Erling Haaland's strengths after the Blues lost 3-1 to Liverpool in the Community Shield.

The Reds looked the sharper of the two teams after playing considerably more friendlies. Trent Alexander-Arnold gave Jurgen Klopp's side the lead with a curling effort which deflected off Nathan Ake before hitting the post and going in.

City started brighter in the second half and Julian Alvarez coming on was the key factor behind this. He tapped home a City equaliser after a lengthy VAR check.

Liverpool were back in front as Ruben Dias was adjudged to have handled a Darwin Nunez header. Mohamed Salah converted and Nunez wrapped it up in stoppage time with a close-range header.

At full time, Wright claimed Haaland had tried an unnecessarily difficult finish in the first half, suggesting the striker will have been under the assumption another chance would come his way - but it didn't until the final stages of the game.

Earlier in the match, Wright was left wondering as to why City were playing the way they were with Haaland on the pitch and offered up some advice to Pep Guardiola. He told ITV Sport: "I’m surprised.

"They’ve got him to do what he’s been doing in this game, we know the way that City play, go to bylines and cut-back. At some stage they’re going to have to see that they don’t have to keep possession, he’s (Haaland) running near post and it’s a ‘last season’ pass (back to the edge of the box)."
