Man City to investigate mocking of Hillsborough disaster during Liverpool FC fixture

Manchester City have launched an official investigation after video footage emerged on social media of two home supporters appearing to mock the Hillsborough disaster during yesterday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.

A clip was widely shared on social media platform Twitter on Sunday evening and it appeared to show two City supporters making obscene gestures in relation to Hillsborough in the direction of Liverpool's supporters after the final whistle. Our sister title - the Liverpool ECHO - understands that City officials are looking into the incident, and are to treat their investigation very seriously.

The individual who is believed to have uploaded the video footage to Twitter, said: "All for the footy banter and that but draw the line with Hillsborough." A total of 97 people lost their lives as a result of the disaster in Sheffield, which occurred in April 1989 during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

The scenes witnessed on Sunday afternoon occurred after City and Liverpool played out an enthralling 2-2 draw, meaning the title race is set to go right down to the wire. City got their noses in front on two occasions in the first-half, but were pegged back each time, with Sadio Mane's cool finish less than a minute after half-time clinching a point for Jurgen Klopp's side.

It means that the two clubs, with seven games left to play, remain separated by just a point, suggesting that the title battle is going to go right down to the wire. A win for City would have opened up a four-point advantage, whereas a win for Liverpool would have seen them move two points ahead at the summit.
