Man City suffer major injury blow as star in tears as he's stretchered off in international game

Nathan Ake was reduced to tears as he left the field on a stretcher in the first half of the Netherlands' Nations League clash with Germany.

The 29-year-old defender appeared to suffer a non-contact injury in the final minutes of the first half of Tuesday's game at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Ake was supported by Liverpool's Cody Gakpo and Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen before being attended to by the Dutch medical team.

The sight of the former Chelsea and Bournemouth defender departing the field on a stretcher will be of huge concern for Pep Guardiola just days ahead of City's Premier League clash against Brentford.

Ake has made just two substitute appearances for City this season - against Manchester United and West Ham United - after being afforded an extended summer break due to his run to the semi-finals of the European Championships.

However, the Dutchman has proved to be a vital cog of Guardiola's side since signing from Bournemouth four years ago and has made over 100 appearances for the Cityzens in the last three seasons.

City host Brentford at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon before beginning their Champions League campaign with a visit from Inter Milan four days later. After that, City face Premier League rivals Arsenal, Newcastle and Fulham before the October international break.
