Man City star ready for Liverpool battle following ‘wake-up call’

Man City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has insisted that they are “used to” Liverpool being contenders following their “wake-up call” against Tottenham.

The league leaders were beaten 3-2 by Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening. Harry Kane scored a brace for the visitors.

Earlier in the day, Liverpool battled back from behind to beat Norwich City 3-1 at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are now just six points behind Man City in the table. They also have a game in hand over the leaders.

The rivals face off at the Etihad in April in what could be a title-deciding game.

Man City are back in action next weekend as they face Frank Lampard’s Everton at Goodison Park. Liverpool meanwhile host Leeds United in midweek before they play Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

Gundogan has suggested that it is good for City that Liverpool are still to travel to the Etihad before the season ends.

“It’s not a situation that we’re not used to. We know from recent years that Liverpool are always contenders. They’re always up there,” Gundogan said (via The Mirror).

“We know they’ll try everything to make our lives as difficult as possible. The good thing is that they still need to come here to the Etihad, but there are still many games to go.

“We kind of thought we’d rescued it [against Tottenham]. If you look at the whole game we deserved to win.

“But football is sometimes crazy and today we made easy mistakes. We gave them the ball to have possibilities to counter and that made us lose the game.
