Man City star at risk of missing potential Champions League semi-final through suspension

Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji is at risk of missing Champions League semi-final first leg through suspension.

Akanji has picked up two yellow cards so far in the European competition meaning that one more will lead to a one-match ban. City travel to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night with a comfortable advantage from the first leg.

Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland were all on the scoresheet at the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola's men put Thomas Tuchel's side to the sword. City will be keen to ensure that they complete the job in midweek to set up an intriguing last-four encounter against either Real Madrid or Chelsea.

However, suspension for Akanji would take some of the gloss off a potential victory. MEN Sport has taken a look at the Champions League rules regarding bans and other topics that you need to be aware of.

Should Akanji manage to get through the Bayern game without receiving another booking, he would be able to compete in a potential semi-final and final. This is because yellow cards are wiped at the completion of the quarter-finals.

If the centre-back is booked at the Allianz and City progress, he will be suspended for the first leg of the semi-finals. Akanji would not be suspended for the first game of next season's Champions League if he is booked tomorrow night and the Blues are knocked out by Bayern as all cautions and pending yellow card suspensions are reset at the end of the campaign.

City could once again face their own full-back Joao Cancelo on Wednesday night. In UEFA competitions, players are allowed to play against their parent clubs unless there is a clause written into the contract that stops their participation.
