Man City set for £76m Champions League boost to soften blow of Real Madrid exit

Manchester City won't defend their Champions League title this season after suffering penalty heartbreak at the hands of Real Madrid - but are still in line to pocket at least £75million from the competition this season.

City entered the competition as reigning Champions, adding the UEFA Super Cup to their trophy collection by beating Sevilla in Athens in August. They recorded a 100 per cent record in the group stages against RB Leipzig, Red Star and Young Boys, before two 3-1 wins over FC Copenhagen in the last-16 to book a quarter-final clash with Real.

The entertaining 3-3 draw in Madrid maintained City's record of scoring three goals in each of their Champions League matches so far this season - a run that came to an end at home on Wednesday where a 1-1 draw forced penalties and an exit before the semi-final stage for the first time in four seasons.

City may be out of Europe, but they have pocketed at least £48m for reaching the quarter-finals - and are set to earn more £50m more from the rest of the prize fund allocation.

City entered the Champions League having already secured €4.5m (£3.84m) for winning the Super Cup and €15.64m (£13.33m) for qualifying for the group stage again. Their perfect group stage results added £2.39m per three points, meaning they took a maximum prize money haul of £14.32m, and qualification for the last-16 added €9.6m (£8.18m) to the prize pot.
