Man City's Josko Gvardiol transfer moves closer as squad number options become clear

Here are your Manchester City headlines for Wednesday, August 2.

City agree £77.5m fee with RB Leipzig for Gvardiol

Manchester City have agreed a straight €90m (£77.5m) fee for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Josko Gvardiol watched RB Leipzig's friendly vs St Truiden on Wednesday from the stands, with City agreeing a fee for the Croatian defender ahead of a move to the Etihad.

City have targeted Gvardiol all summer, with Leipzig putting a deadline on the transfer to go through before the start of their season in order to give them time to find a replacement.

The 21-year-old will now travel to Manchester for a medical at the end of this week and for terms to be agreed, although there is no timeframe on whether a deal will be completed before Sunday's Community Shield.

Squad numbers available to Gvardiol

Gvardiol will become the second arrival at the Etihad, following fellow Croatian international Mateo Kovacic who arrived in a £25m deal from Chelsea at the end of June. Leipzig had initially demanded at least €100m for their defender, with City able to bring that price down slightly.

Pep Guardiola evidently set his sights on Gvardiol, who was very impressive at the World Cup in Qatar and was a consistent performer for Leipzig throughout last season. The Blues boss will hope to have his new defender around for the Premier League opener against Burnley next Friday.

It might not be long until we find out what shirt number Gvardiol will don at City, and there are several options currently available for him.
