Man City Ilkay Gundogan transfer stance after Barcelona bombshell

Ilkay Gundogan could make a sensational return to Manchester City just a year after leaving on a free transfer.

Gundogan joined Barcelona in the summer of 2023 after City failed to act early enough to convince the player of his importance at the Etihad, and Pep Guardiola subsequently struggled to find anyone with his specific qualities. This summer, City have lost Julian Alvarez and need Rodri cover but have said they will only act in the transfer market if a versatile player is available for a thrifty price.

As they wait for the right opportunity, Gundogan's situation has presented itself to City with 11 days of the window remaining. His age profile is not what City usually look for and the deal would have to be right for the player and the rest of the squad, but his experience and quality would give guarantees to Guardiola that few other potential signings possess.

Earlier this month Gundogan's agent and uncle Ilhan Gundogan sought to end speculation around his future, stating that "Ilkay's position is very clear: he will stay in Barcelona." Head coach Hansi Flick said at the weekend that his feeling was that the player would remain at the club.

However, reports from Spain since paint a picture of Barcelona being clear that Gundogan - one of their best players last season - was not part of their plans as they look to manage their financial position. As the 33-year-old explores his options, so City consider whether an incredible return could be on for the man who captained them to the Treble.
