Man City hero David Silva ventures into new career after retirement from football

David Silva is one of three former Manchester City players to have a statue outside of the Etihad Stadium, and became the final of the trio to retire.

The Spaniard was forced to follow the footsteps of Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany and hang up his boots after suffering a significant knee injury in pre-season at Real Sociedad. Silva helped City to their maiden Premier League title in 2012 before going on to grab three more.

He left the Blues in 2020 having also won two FA Cups, five League Cups and two Community Shields across his 10-year stay. He became a Spanish football icon having lifted the 2010 World Cup sandwiched in between the 2008 and 2012 European Championship triumphs.

But the 37-year-old has pivoted away from the game upon retirement and ventured into a new industry - winemaking. The Mirror says Silva is focusing his attention on his winery in Gran Canaria.

His wine has been a roaring success and is exported all over the world with the help of experienced winemaker Jonatan Garcia, whom he met over Twitter after initially thinking he was a spammer.

“I got into wine through my former teammate and good friend, Sisi, at Valencia,” Silva said. “I drank wine, but not the typical wines. Then I started to buy wines from Madrid that I got sent over to Manchester.

“Then I met Jonatan and from that moment on it was like, 'Wow' – from that day my mind was like, 'It's amazing to discover this wine world'. I bought the vineyard four years ago, but back then I didn't have the cellar. It was only the vines. Then we built the cellar.”
