Man City great Francis Lee's funeral to be held at Manchester Cathedral on Thursday

The life of Manchester City great Francis Lee will be celebrated at Manchester Cathedral on Thursday morning.

Former teammates from City, Bolton, Derby, and England as well as other famous faces from the football world will join friends and family in the city centre to celebrate the life of Lee, who enjoyed great success in football and business and will long be remembered in the city.

While priority in the cathedral will be for friends, family and those unable to stand, all are welcome to the service at 10am on Thursday, with no need to wear black and floral tributes welcomed. Any donations to The Christie - a charity close to Lee's heart - are also appreciated.

Pep Guardiola and his players marked Lee's passing this month with a moment of silence before training and black armbands for their match against RB Leipzig, while flags were flown at half-mast outside the club. Mike Summerbee, part of a famous trilogy alongside Lee and Colin Bell that earned domestic and European success with the Blues, spoke about the impact that his friend had made.

“Francis believed in himself, and he was a great goal scorer, and he could turn a game," he said.

“We always looked to Francis and he was just absolutely superb. He was a working-class lad who came from Westhoughton and was so admired by everyone.

"He was a very clever man and very astute in business, but he never changed. He was Francis Lee.

“We’ve lost one of the nicest people you could possibly meet. As a footballer he was magnificent, as a Manchester City chairman he was magnificent.”
