Nephew of Man City great is impressing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

If Ethan Williams needs a book to hide behind for Sunday's derby, the Manchester United youngster has just been given one by his uncle... talking about Manchester City's Treble win.

There will be a humongous global audience for the meeting between two of the biggest clubs in the world separated by just a few miles, and across the city there will be many families with divided loyalties hoping that the match goes their way. That includes the Williams', with uncle Alex putting his feet up and nephew Ethan at the start of a promising career.

City fans need no introduction to Alex Williams, who rose to prominence in the early 1980s as one of the first black goalkeepers in the modern top flight before dedicating himself to community work at the club for over 30 years that has seen him join legends David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Sergio Aguero in having a pitch at the training ground named after him. Williams has charted the highs and lows of his career in a recent autobiography, that also touched upon a teenager making waves at United.

“Ethan is progressing well and has the potential to go all the way," Alex wrote in You Saw Me Standing Alone. “He’s the younger son of my brother Lloyd and is similar in style to former City winger Leroy Sane.

"He’s quick, has a terrific left foot and an eye for goal. He’s destined to be a star, although it’s a shame his favourite colour is red rather than blue. I just hope Ethan is as happy during his career as I was during mine.”
