Man City get Nathan Ake boost after injury scare on international duty

Nathan Ake returned to training with the Dutch national team to ease Manchester City concerns over an injury.

Ake, who missed the Community Shield with a hamstring picked up on the summer tour to Asia, appeared to suffer another hamstring when the Netherlands played Greece and was substituted at half-time in that match. His coach Ronald Koeman confirmed after the match that they did not want to take any risks with the defender.

Despite De Telegraaf reporting the player still seemed to be in discomfort in training on Friday, the fact that he was back on the grass was seen as a good sign. The 28-year-old is expected to be available to Koeman for their game against Republic of Ireland on Sunday evening.

Pep Guardiola pleaded with his players to return from this fortnight without any injuries and City will hope to be able to count on Ake when they head to West Ham next Saturday.

As part of a shake-up of the Champions League that will see more teams and more matches, UEFA have also made moves to base their funding system on how clubs have performed in continental competitions over a five-year cycle rather than the current period of ten years.
