Man City fans give nod to defender for Atletico Madrid performance as Foden and De Bruyne hailed

Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden were the two clear top performers against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night according to Manchester City fans.

Foden provided the magic spark needed after his introduction on 68 minutes, setting up De Bruyne’s winner to give City a 1-0 advantage ahead of their Champions League quarter-final second leg clash in Spain. Blues fans who used the Manchester Evening News player rater marked the duo as the outstanding influencers with both receiving an average rating of 8.4 out of 10.

Nathan Ake came in at third with a score of 7.6. The Netherlands international was put in at left-back and seemed to be targeted by Atletico out-balls in the first half but dealt with Antoine Griezmann superbly.

Meanwhile, John Stones, Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva, Ederson - who hardly had a touch all game - and Rodri all gathered plus-seven ratings. Ilkay Gundogan struggled to put his mark on the game amid a congested midfield, and scored 6.9, while wide men Riyah Mahrez and Raheem Sterling were given 6.7 after finding it tough to frequently break into the box.

Substitutes Gabriel Jesus and Jack Grealish - who both came on at the same time as Foden - both prop up the table with scores of 6.5 and 5.9 respectively. Jesus managed to hassle and hurry the Atletico defence when in possession but would only get a yellow card to show for it.

Grealish won a number of free kicks and was clearly the subject of targeted tackles in the final 20 minutes. Angel Correra slammed the ball into his face after being felled by a challenge, which prompted Pep Guardiola to intervene amid a short melee.

But City got the job done and travel to Madrid
