Man City defender Sergio Gomez sets return date after training ground injury

Sergio Gomez is expected back in training with Manchester City after the November international break after positive assessments of a training injury.

Gomez suffered an issue with his ankle last week during a session at the City Football Academy and the fact that it wasn't a contact injury raised concerns that the lay-off could be significant. The 23-year-old arrived at the Etihad on Saturday for the match against Bournemouth on crutches.

However, the injury has now been confirmed as a straightforward sprain to the ankle and the expectation is that he will be able to return to working with the group after the international break. Pep Guardiola's side host Liverpool on November 25 to kick off a busy end to the year that will include a week in Saudi Arabia for the Club World Cup.

Guardiola will be looking to rotate his squad through this busy period to keep his whole squad fresh and should City confirm their place in the Champions League knockouts with victory against Young Boys on Tuesday night they will have two games against RB Leipzig and Red Star Belgrade where there will be room to spread minutes around the squad.

"I want everybody involved," said Guardiola. "If they perform as they perform, I try to rotate. I have always done it.

"They have to play good, but I'm not a fan to play the same 11 guys all the time otherwise it is so difficult to maintain the situation of the other guys for them to continue to be here."
