Man City boss Pep Guardiola makes Erling Haaland prediction as he chases Dixie Dean record

Pep Guardiola has backed Erling Haaland to score "a lot more goals" in Manchester City's six remaining Premier League fixtures as he chases down a place in the record books.

Haaland is level with Andy Cole and Alan Shearer on 34 goals in the Premier League and needs just one more to set a new landmark in that competition. He has 50 in all competitions, 13 short of the goalscoring record set by Dixie Dean in 1927/28.

The Norwegian could have 10 games left in all competitions to match that total, if City reach the Champions League final, and while Guardiola has been keen to praise the framework of his side in delivering chances to Haaland, he knows those records are good news for the club.

"Of course it’s good for him and the team, it’s a good sign, the magnitude of a record is for a long time it’s not broken," said Guardiola.

"All will be broken one day. I’m pretty sure he’ll score more in the Premier League until the end of the season."

Haaland has 17 goals in his last 10 games for City to put a place in the record books in sight and while Guardiola admits he's been surprised by the £51million striker's goalscoring heroics, he's not sure the player himself is that surprised.

"It's a surprise for us but maybe not for him to do what he’s done in this difficult league. The way he behaves is for the success of the team," he said.
