Man City are in an unlikely position to break their own Premier League record

A flurry of goals has given Manchester City the unlikely prospect of breaking a Premier League record they themselves set under Pep Guardiola.

One of the many markers of their domination in the season where they won the title with 100 points in 2018 was their goal difference, which weighed in at a whopping +79. The Blues scored an incredible 106 goals - another record - and only conceded 27 to raise their standard.

With two games to go, it is very unlikely that Guardiola's strikerless side will score the 10 or 11 goals required to match or better that scoring record - but their defensive numbers mean they could yet top the +79 if they can continue their remarkable form that they have hit in recent weeks.

Having trailed Liverpool on goal difference for much of the season, City have sensationally turned the table on their rivals to effectively eke out an extra point in the title race. Even if Jurgen Klopp's side make up the three-point gap, they will also have to achieve a seven-goal swing to leapfrog their rivals.

More of a possibility, despite seeming unfathomable a few weeks ago and still being unlikely, is that the Blues could achieve the net goal rate of seven or eight goals over their final fixtures with West Ham and Aston Villa to eclipse themselves. City's goal difference has gone from +52 to +72 in the space of just five matches as Guardiola's side have battered multiple opponents in their pursuit of the title.
