Man City are being punished for their success - and it won't stop any time soon

Manchester City are consistently competing at the top in multiple competitions. It’s become a test of their squad’s strength and depth every season, and remarkably Pep’s men come out the other side with more trophies in their cabinet.

Two seasons ago, they won an incredible treble of trophies out of the four competitions they competed in. Now, they’ve just suffered their fifth loss in a row across all competitions, they’ve been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, they’re 10th in the Champions League table and eight points off Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

It’s a position City aren’t entirely unfamiliar with, but far from treble-winning form. With the schedule getting busier and tournaments getting bigger, injures and poor fitness are likely to follow, and it may be hurting City’s pursuit of silverware.

Last year, FIFA announced the expansion of both the FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. The latter of which starts in its new format next June in the United States. For the first time in its history, the competition will compromise of 32 clubs from across the world competing in an identical format to what is now the old format of the World Cup. The new format will now have 48 countries competing in 12 groups with an additional knock-out round. This new-look version begins after the conclusion of next season.

City start their participation in the new FIFA Club World Cup on June 15. Just three weeks after the final day of the Premier League season and only two weeks if City make it to the Champions League final
