Man City allege coins thrown at Pep Guardiola after VAR decision as Liverpool FC issue statement about fan chants

Pep Guardiola said that coins were thrown at him in the aftermath of Manchester City's disallowed goal against Liverpool.

City's coach had reacted furiously when Anthony Taylor opted to rule out Phil Foden's strike as he argued that it went against the policy that the referee had told the teams he would adapt. After sarcastically applauding the decision, he then turned around to the baying Liverpool fans and raised his arms as they jeered.

It is then that Guardiola and the club say that the coins were thrown at him, adding another unsavoury incident to a modern rivalry that has spilled beyond the line of acceptability on a few occasions. A few coins were handed to the officials by coaches to highlight the fact that they had been thrown into the dugout.

Guardiola joked after the game that there had been less accuracy this year than when the City bus was attacked on their way into the stadium for their 2018 Champions League quarter-final. "Next time they will do it better," he said.

"They didn't get me. They tried but didn't get me. They got it on the coach years ago but not this time."

In a separate incident, Liverpool released a statement saying that they were 'deeply disappointed to hear vile chants relating to football stadium tragedies from the away section' and also condemned graffiti on the same theme.

"We are working with the relevant authorities and we will also work with Manchester City in order to do our utmost to ensure these chants are eradicated from football altogether."
