Man City 2-2 Liverpool: Peter Drury’s commentary was epic

Peter Drury further enhanced his status as football’s most poetic commentator during Sunday’s top-of-the-table Premier League clash between Manchester City and Liverpool.

The much-loved 54-year-old Brit provides commentary of the biggest Premier League and Champions League matches to a global audience.

UK-based football fans don’t often have the privilege of hearing Drury commentate as a result, which is a huge shame.

Although Sky Sports’ Martin Tyler is a legend in his own right and Darren Fletcher does a fine job on BT Sport, it would be nice for UK viewers to have more Peter Drury in their lives.

Fortunately, though, snippets of Drury at his poetic best are regularly posted on social media for everyone to enjoy.

And as Man City and Liverpool’s players emerged from the tunnel at the Etihad on Sunday, Drury found the perfect words to set the scene.

As Jordan Henderson and Kevin De Bruyne led their teams out, Drury said of Liverpool: “Energy, thrust and power… rolling red momentum, a perfect 10 straight wins. Uncrushably self-certain, unyielding to the notion of surrender when not three months ago they seemed defeated.

“And City, whose throne for now at least it remains, this blue-bound textbook of jaunty, geometry of angles, the scintillating science of sport, precision engineering, frictionless football… they are just a thrill, two beautiful, beautiful football teams.”
