Man City 115 charges latest with Premier League clubs ‘fearing’ large legal bill

The ongoing legal battle between Manchester City and the Premier League is set to rack up significant costs for both parties, which could impact the other 19 top-flight clubs.

The Premier League is thought to have already splashed many millions on the case already, even before the hearing, which is now into its second week. Meanwhile, the outcome of another white-paper wrangle between the League and Man City is expected soon.

Over the summer, a separate hearing was held regarding Associated Party Transaction [APT] rules, which allow the Premier League to oversee deals between entities connected with club owners to ensure agreements are not inflated above the market rate. Man City argue that this oversight is unjust.

The reason why clubs are so worried about the Premier League’s legal bill in its 115-charge battle with Man City, according to the Telegraph, is because it is feared the cost will slice the amount they are given in commercial and broadcast revenue next year.

The deficit is thought to run into the millions and could be paid off using some of the money usually dished out to clubs each season. Members are each paid an equal share plus a proportional share based on merit, or where they finish in the table, alongside ‘facility payments’ for the number of live broadcasts hosted.

In addition to this case, the Premier League has faced legal challenges with Everton and Nottingham Forest over points deductions and Leicester City regarding the timeframe of charges brought forward.
