Man, 59, dies after car hits standing water on M67 motorway and rolls over

A man died after a car hit standing water on a motorway then rolled over after smashing into a verge, police said.

The 59-year-old, who hasn't been named, subsequently passed away from his injuries, Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Friday as specialist collision investigators issued an appeal.

Emergency services were called to a stretch of the M67 motorway in Hyde, Tameside.

The collision happened between junctions three and four of the motorway, just before the Halton Street road bridge, GMP said.

The man was a front seat passenger in the car. It's not known whether there were any other injuries and no further details have been released by the force.

The car, which hasn't been described, is said to have hit a patch of standing water at around 9.34am on Monday, January 29, then lost control. It veered towards a verge then hit it, causing the car to roll over.

GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) has now issued an appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

In a statement, GMP said: "On Monday 29 January 2024 at around 9.34am, officers were called to a road traffic collision on the M67 motorway between junctions 3 and 4.

"Just before the Halton Street Bridge, a vehicle hit standing water which resulted in it losing control. The car subsequently veered towards a verge and collided with it, causing the car to roll. The front seat passenger, a 59-year-old man, subsequently died from his injuries.

"GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone who has dashcam footage, to come forward and assist their investigation.
