Make a family pledge to balance screen time these Easter holidays
Finding the balance between screen time and quality family time can feel like a daily juggle.
And, as children increasingly use their devices for learning and staying in touch with friends and family, as well as gaming and streaming, the line on what’s a reasonable amount of screen time becomes more blurred.
So with the Easter holidays approaching, how do you reach a compromise that everyone’s happy with?
Throughout 2026 we’re running The Family Chat, a campaign with Tesco Mobile to encourage families to start open and honest conversations at home around online safety.
Author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher is speaking to fellow parents and their children about the issues they face, how they’re dealing with them, and how Tesco Mobile’s online safety resources can really help.
These useful resources include a downloadable family pledge where you can agree simple commitments on healthy screen time habits and keeping kids safe online.
Giovanna says she and husband Tom are currently managing well, but she’s conscious that the situation should be reviewed regularly.
“Our rule is not allowing time on the phone to become an activity in itself, especially not at age 11, because there are so many other things they could be doing,” she says.
“I feel lucky that our kids have lots of interests, although I’m sure it will change as they get older and there might be more conversations that we need to have.
“Our eldest loves his music, loves going outside and running around, and he and the other kids are constantly coming up with new games.
“We gave him one of our old phones when he went to secondary school, but the novelty hasn’t sucked him in so we’ll keep adapting and seeing what that looks like.”
