Major UK airport evacuated and flights suspended as passengers warned 'don't travel' - live updates

A major UK airport has been evacuated with all flights suspended as police attend reports of a 'suspicious vehicle'.

Birmingham Airport issued a statement on social media warning passengers not to travel to the airport.

In a post on X shortly after 1.30pm on Wednesday, the airport said West Midlands Police was on site "dealing with an incident".

The statement added: "Airport operations are currently suspended. Passengers are advised to NOT come to the airport at this time. The Airport’s social media channels will be updated as and when the situation changes."

West Midlands Police said the airport was evacuated "following a report of suspicious vehicle".

In a post on X, the force wrote: "Birmingham Airport is currently being evacuated following a report of suspicious vehicle. This is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and staff."

Birmingham Airport is the seventh busiest airport in the UK and is an operating base for airlines including easyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair and TUI.

One passengers says people have been 'herded' to the nearby exhibition centre while police attend the incident.

"So this is fun," they wrote on X. "Birmingham Airport has been evacuated after reports of a 'suspicious vehicle’ and we’ve all been herded to the NEC."

Images show staff and passengers outside the airport with police on the scene. West Midlands Police put a statement out on social media just before 2pm to say the airport was currently being evacuated.
