Maidstone United striker Matt Rush leaves the Gallagher Stadium for National League football at Sutton

Striker Matt Rush has moved up a level after rejecting a new contract at Maidstone.

Rush, 23, was offered fresh terms having made an impressive impact at the Gallagher Stadium following his move from Aveley in November.

He scored 15 goals for the Stones, adding to six for the Millers, and laid on plenty more with his tireless work rate as George Elokobi’s side reached the National League South play-off semi-finals.

But his form attracted interest elsewhere and the former Southend man has joined Sutton United in the National League.

The U’s are back in non-league football this season after three years in League 2.

In a message to Sutton supporters, Rush said, “I can’t wait to get going, can’t wait to score some goals in front of you and I can’t wait to get promoted.”

Rush was coached by former Newcastle and Manchester United striker Andy Cole at Southend.

And he’ll be working with another ex-forward in Sutton manager Steve Morison, who made his name at Millwall and also played for Norwich and Leeds.

“I’m buzzing to get the deal with Rushy over the line,” Morison told the club website.

“He’s had a fantastic season at both Aveley and Maidstone, and since leaving Southend he’s really grown as a player, and I really think he can continue his form with us at the next level.

“The fans are going to love watching him, his work rate is second to none and he scores such good goals in the penalty box.”

Maidstone appear to have been anticipating Rush’s exit, signing forwards Aaron Blair, Shaq Coulthirst and Pierre Fonkeu this summer.
