George Elokobi says there are no big guns in National League South as Maidstone prepare to face Torquay.
United meet the Gulls in their first home game of the new season at the Gallagher Stadium this Saturday (3pm).
Torquay are the biggest club in the division in terms of fanbase and Football League history, and are many people’s favourites to win the title after finishing runners-up last season.
It’s an exciting early-season fixture but Stones boss Elokobi is keen to treat it as just another game rather than putting undue pressure on his new-look side.
“No one is a big gun in the National League South – nobody is a big gun,” said Elokobi, whose side opened the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Hemel Hempstead.
“Torquay is another game for us.
“They’re coming to the Gallagher and we have to make sure we are ready.
“We have to be positive, we have to carry on working and make sure we are nailing down those small details that we’ve seen we could do better.
“We’ll prepare for a good test against a good side in Torquay.
“I’m sure our fans will come out in their numbers and Torquay are going to bring lots of fans as well.
“It’s always been a good encounter between the two clubs, it doesn’t matter if it’s home or away.
“When Saturday comes, we’re going to go out, we’re going to have a team and a squad to compete against all the sides in the National League South, and our next fixture is Torquay.”
Elokobi was pleased with Maidstone’s performance at Hemel, where only an injury-time equaliser denied them three points after Dajon Golding’s first-half opener.
He wants his players to build on that against Torquay, who launched their promotion bid with a 3-1 win over Enfield.
