Maidstone United manager George Elokobi’s reaction following 1-1 draw with Torquay United in National League South

George Elokobi felt for his players after Maidstone conceded another injury-time equaliser.

For the second week running, the Stones were denied victory in added time as Torquay returned to Devon with a 1-1 draw.

Just as at Hemel Hempstead in their opening game of the National League South season, United produced a display worthy of victory.

But they had to settle for a point after Jordan Young’s 95th-minute penalty cancelled out John Gilbert’s early strike.

“I thought we were magnificent,” said Stones boss Elokobi.

“It should have been three points.

“There was only one team that looked like they were going to win it, that created the better chances, and controlled territory and possession.

“I feel for our group of players because they were excellent in everything they did today, offensively, defensively and they showed a lot of character.

“It’s important our players learn from it.

“When we’ve created those chances, we’ve got to make sure we finish games off and make sure in the closing moments we can stay nice and relaxed.

“It was an absolutely amazing performance from every individual that went out on that pitch today, in front of our magnificent fans.”

Maidstone have gelled impressively for a team who have been together for a matter of weeks.

But late lapses come with the territory, so Elokobi won’t be beating himself up over a second injury-time setback.

“That’s not a concern,” he said. “That’s what happens when you haven’t got continuity. It’s as simple as that.
