Maidstone United forward Dajon Golding in competition with John Gilbert to be top goalscorer

Dajon Golding is on a mission to overhaul John Gilbert as Maidstone’s top scorer.

Golding has six goals to his name this season, two behind Gilbert, who tops the charts with eight.

Gilbert moved clear with his double against Charlton’s youngsters in the Kent Senior Cup a fortnight ago.

The pair are driving each other on, which can only benefit the team as United step up their National League South play-off challenge after Christmas.

Golding has shown his versatility, playing out wide and through the middle in different systems, and is determined to keep doing his bit.

Discussing his form in a Stones shirt, Golding said: “It’s not been too bad.

“I’ve got six goals. I’ve been in and out, played a variety of positions this season, but I’m just happy to contribute.

“I’m trying to catch up with Gilbs. He’s on eight goals, I’m on six, so it’s a fight for that top goalscorer spot. I need it. He got two in the Kent Senior Cup the other day - I was fuming!

“We drive each other on and that’s one thing I’ve enjoyed here, it’s just so competitive.

“Everyone’s of a great standard, everyone works hard and it’s not even a thing where if you’re out of the team, you’re angry or upset, everyone wants the team to win and you want to contribute and do your best for the team.”

Golding sees Christmas as a vital time of the season as teams look to push on.

Maidstone host Kent rivals Dover on Boxing Day in a 1pm kick-off before travelling to Hornchurch on Tuesday night.
